The Life of David Baum zt'l

On Friday 19 October 2007 a delegation from the Royal College of Paediatric and Child Health (RCPCH) made their first-ever visit to an Israeli hospital to attend the opening of the new David Baum Family Resource Room at the Bildirici Diabetes Centre at Laniado Hospital in Netanya. *

“It does not help if you feel that nothing can be done. Instead ask yourself how you, using your individual skills and gifts, can make a difference”          J David Baum

David Baum was passionate in his work to improve the lives of children. He worked with tremendous energy and enthusiasm for the creation of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health and became president shortly after its foundation. He was a remarkable paediatrician who brought humour and love of life to everything he did. He believed in making a difference to the world.  David died suddenly on the 5th September 1999 whilst taking part in a sponsored bicycle ride to raise money for child health services in Kosovo and Gaza.
David's signature story which embodied his beliefs and modus operandi is the story of the Starfish. It represents his deep dedication to each individual person as an important human being, a view which Lanaido Hospital holds as its most valued principle.

Once a man was walking along a beach. The sun was shining and it was a beautiful day. In the distance he could see a person going back and forth between the surf's edge and the beach. As the man approached, he could see that there were hundreds of starfish stranded on the sand as the result of the natural action of the tide.
The man was stuck by the apparent futility of the task. There were far too
many starfish. Many of them were sure to perish. As he approached the
person continued the task of picking up starfish one by one and throwing
them into the surf. As he came up to the person he said, "You must be crazy. There are thousands of miles of beach covered with starfish. You can't possibly make a difference." The person looked at the man. He then stooped down and
pick up one more starfish and threw it back into the ocean. He turned
back to the man and said, "It made a difference to that one!"
